Ulbra vs. Pinheiros
SAO PAULO (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Tuesday when the surging Pinheiros host the struggling Ulbra in a Brazilian Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) matchup at Ginasio Poliesportivo Henrique Villaboim.
Pinheiros (28-8) enters as one of the league’s elite, sitting near the top of the standings and fresh off a dominant 88-55 victory over Pato Basquete on April 16. Ulbra (10-25), mired near the bottom, is coming off a rare bright spot, a 95-63 win over Bauru on the same date, which snapped a two-game skid.
The season series has been decisively one-sided. On Jan. 17, Pinheiros routed Ulbra 93-65 at home. Their earlier meeting on Oct. 18, 2025, was closer, but Pinheiros still emerged with an 88-86 road victory.
A key matchup will feature Ulbra forward Guilherme Santos against Pinheiros’ C.J. Penha. Santos is coming off his best performance of the season, scoring 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the win over Bauru. He has averaged 11 points and 5.3 rebounds over his last four games. Penha, however, has been a consistent force for the powerhouse home side. He led Pinheiros with 17 points, five rebounds and two assists in their last outing and has scored in double figures in three of his last four appearances.
For Ulbra to pull off a major road upset, they will need another high-level performance from Santos and center Matheus Custodio, who posted a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) against Bauru. Their recent victory provides a glimmer of confidence, but consistency has been an issue; prior to the Bauru win, they had lost four of their previous five.
Pinheiros, meanwhile, boasts superior depth and firepower, exemplified by guard David Sloan’s 16-point effort in the last game and the steady frontcourt presence of Yan Barbosa. Despite two narrow road losses to Sao Jose and Corinthians earlier in April, Pinheiros has won eight of its last ten and has been nearly unbeatable at home.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. local tip-off Tuesday in Sao Paulo. Based on records, recent form and head-to-head history, Pinheiros is the overwhelming favorite, but Ulbra will look to build on its most impressive victory of the season.
