Manati vs. Caguas

CAGUAS, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Caguas Criollos host the Manatí Atenienses on Thursday in a Baloncesto Superior Nacional matchup that pits a first-place contender against a struggling squad.

Caguas (15-8) enters the game with the second-best record in the league, while Manatí (7-14) has lost six straight and sits near the bottom of the standings. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at the Coliseo Héctor Solá Bezares.

The Criollos are led by center Moses Brown, who has been a dominant force in the paint. Brown averaged 25 points and 16 rebounds in a 101-88 win at Aguada on Saturday, and he posted 18 points and five rebounds in a 104-101 victory over Guaynabo on May 25. Over his last five games, the 7-foot-2 former UCLA standout has recorded four double-doubles, including a 24-point, 15-rebound effort against Quebradillas on May 14.

Caguas also gets production from guard Christian Lopez, who scored 22 points in the win over Aguada, and forward Louis King, who contributed eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists in that same game.

Manatí has been inconsistent, but guard Tyquan Rolon has been a bright spot. Rolon logged 40 minutes and posted 19 points, four rebounds and eight assists in a heartbreaking 82-81 loss to Carolina on Monday. He scored 21 points against Quebradillas on May 23 and had 18 points against San Germán on May 11. However, the Atenienses have lost seven of their last eight games, with the lone win coming against Caguas on May 9.

In that most recent head-to-head meeting, Manatí defeated Caguas 94-89 on May 9. Rolon had four points and two assists in that game, while Cheick Diallo led Manatí with 22 points. The Criollos won the earlier meeting this season, 100-92 on April 7.

Manatí is coming off a one-point loss to Carolina, where Diallo scored 22 points and Kristian Doolittle added 14 points and six rebounds. The Atenienses have lost six straight since that May 9 win over Caguas, with all but one defeat coming by single digits.

Caguas, meanwhile, has won four of its last five games and is 7-3 at home this season. The Criollos boast a deep roster that also includes forwards and guards who can stretch the floor.

Following Thursday’s game, Manatí travels to Santurce on Saturday.
