Quebradillas vs. Santurce
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Santurce Cangrejeros host the Quebradillas Piratas on Wednesday night at Jose Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in a Baloncesto Superior Nacional matchup that carries playoff implications for both struggling sides.
Santurce (9-10) enters with a two-game winning streak, most recently a 95-92 victory over San German on Saturday. Forward Davon Jefferson has been the catalyst, averaging 20.3 points and 12.7 rebounds over his last four games. In Saturday’s win, Jefferson logged 36 minutes, tallying 21 points and 15 rebounds. The 6-foot-8 veteran is shooting efficiently and dominating the glass, a key factor as Santurce looks to climb above .500.
Quebradillas (7-16) snapped a two-game skid with an 88-82 win against Arecibo on Sunday, lifting the league’s last-place team into a tie with Bayamon. Guard Emmanuel Mudiay has been the offensive anchor, averaging 21.8 points and 5.0 assists over his last five games. In Sunday’s victory, Mudiay posted 21 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists in 36 minutes. The former NBA first-round pick has scored at least 17 points in eight of his last nine outings.
These teams last met April 26, when Quebradillas edged Santurce 96-95 at home. The Piratas have won two of the last three head-to-head meetings. Santurce, however, will have the home-court advantage at the 18,500-seat coliseum, where they are 5-5 this season.
Quebradillas relies heavily on its backcourt. In addition to Mudiay, point guard Anthony Cowan contributed 12 points and 8 assists in the Arecibo win, and forward Phillip Wheeler added 22 points. The Piratas rank near the bottom of the BSN in scoring defense, allowing 98.0 points per game, and will need to contain Jefferson in the paint.
Santurce’s supporting cast has been steady. Forward Isaiah Pineiro recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds against San German, while guard Walter Hodge chipped in 18 points. The Cangrejeros have won four of their last six and are 4-4 at home.
Wednesday’s game is the first of a busy week for both teams. Quebradillas hosts San German on Friday, then visits Mayaguez on Sunday. Santurce hosts Manati on Saturday.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. AST.
