Santurce vs. Arecibo
ARECIBO, Puerto Rico (Interstat) — The Baloncesto Superior Nacional will feature a stark contrast in fortunes Thursday night when the Arecibo Capitanes host the Santurce Cangrejeros at Manuel Iguina Coliseum.
Arecibo (12-4) enters the 7:30 p.m. tipoff riding a four-game winning streak, while Santurce (5-10) has dropped four of its last five and sits near the bottom of the BSN standings.
The Capitanes have been one of the league’s most consistent teams, powered by forward Jack McVeigh. The Australian import is averaging 26 points over his last two outings, including a 26-point, 3-rebound, 3-assist performance in Arecibo’s 96-86 home win over Mayaguez on May 14. McVeigh dropped 30 points with eight rebounds and four assists in a 92-81 victory at Aguada on May 8. He also posted 23 points and four rebounds in a 87-85 home win over Mayaguez on May 4.
Santurce, meanwhile, has struggled for consistency but showed signs of life in its most recent game — a 98-79 home rout of Carolina on May 14. Forward Davon Jefferson led the way with 20 points and 15 rebounds in 34 minutes, adding three assists. Guard Angel Rodriguez contributed 14 points and 13 assists, and Ian Clark added 21 points.
Jefferson has been Santurce’s most productive player throughout a difficult stretch. In an 80-82 loss at Carolina on May 12, he posted 24 points and 15 rebounds. However, his minutes and production have been uneven: he played just 16 minutes in an 80-82 loss at Bayamon on May 9 (4 points, 8 rebounds) and only one minute in a 83-95 home loss to Caguas on May 7 (4 points, 6 rebounds). Over his last eight games, Jefferson has averaged roughly 13 points and 8 rebounds while logging an average of 18 minutes.
Arecibo’s depth has been a key factor. Alongside McVeigh, guard Diego Pellot scored 15 points with six rebounds and four assists in the May 14 win, and point guard Rafael Pinzon added 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists. The Capitanes have won three of their last four home games, with the lone loss coming to league-leading Ponce on April 24.
Santurce, in contrast, has lost six of its last seven road games, with the exception being a 110-94 win at Bayamon on April 22. The Cangrejeros will look to build on their offensive explosion against Carolina — they shot 48 percent from the field and forced 17 turnovers.
Thursday’s game is the first of a home-and-home for both teams. Arecibo travels to Mayaguez on Saturday, while Santurce returns home to face Aguada.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Atlantic Standard Time. The game will be broadcast locally on BSN’s digital platform.
