Calgary vs. Winnipeg
WINNIPEG (Interstat) — The Calgary Surge visit the Winnipeg Sea Bears on Friday night at Canada Life Centre in a critical early-season matchup for two Canadian Elite Basketball League teams hovering near .500.
Calgary (7-8) enters on a five-game losing streak, most recently falling 96-80 at Scarborough on June 6. Winnipeg (6-7) dropped its last outing 97-91 at Montreal on June 5 but snapped a three-game skid with a 117-88 road win at Ottawa on June 4.
The Surge will lean on forward Javonte Brown, who recorded a double-double in the loss at Scarborough with 15 points and 14 rebounds in 32 minutes. Brown has been productive in recent defeats, scoring 17 points with 11 boards against Scarborough on May 28 and adding 12 points and three rebounds at Fraser Valley on May 24. However, he played only 10 minutes in a 104-98 loss to Edmonton on May 31, finishing with six points and four rebounds.
Winnipeg counters with forward Teddy Allen, who has been on a scoring tear. Allen poured in 33 points with 10 rebounds and four assists in the loss at Montreal and erupted for 32 points and 12 boards in the win at Ottawa. He has scored at least 25 points in five of his last seven games, including a 28-point, seven-rebound effort in a 100-98 loss at Saskatoon on May 29.
The last meeting between the teams came Aug. 22, 2025, when Calgary won 90-79 at home. The Surge have dropped three straight at home since that victory, including an 88-93 loss to Ottawa on May 12 and a 91-72 defeat at Hamilton on May 17.
Both teams are jockeying for position in the CEBL standings. Friday’s game marks the first of two consecutive matchups, with the teams meeting again Sunday in Calgary. Winnipeg then hosts Fraser Valley on June 18, while Calgary returns home to face Hamilton on June 17.
