Hermosillo vs. Tijuana

TIJUANA, Mexico (Interstat) — The Tijuana Zonkeys host the Hermosillo Rayos on Wednesday at Auditorio Fausto Gutierrez in a CIBACOPA matchup that carries playoff implications for both teams.

Tijuana (15-15) enters with a .500 record, while Hermosillo (13-19) sits below the break-even mark. The Zonkeys own a 2-0 advantage in the season series, having swept a two-game set in Hermosillo in February by scores of 87-75 and 84-66.

The Zonkeys have lost four of their last five games, including a 114-94 home defeat to Culiacan on April 25. Forward Alex Williams has been a consistent offensive presence despite the recent slide. Over his last two games, Williams averaged 23.5 points, including a 24-point effort against Culiacan on April 25 and 23 points in an 86-82 loss to the same opponent the following night. He also posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in an April 21 loss at Ciudad de Mexico.

Hermosillo split its most recent two-game series with Culiacan, winning 99-90 on Saturday behind a strong performance from guard Donald Carey. The shooting guard logged 30 minutes, scoring 22 points with five rebounds and seven assists. Carey has been productive in the Rayos’ recent wins, averaging 19.3 points over the team’s last four victories, including a 23-point, six-rebound outing April 22 at Los Mochis and a 16-point, nine-assist game against Ciudad de Mexico on April 24.

The Rayos are 5-5 over their last 10 contests but have yet to solve Tijuana this season.

Interstat’s ELO system projects Tijuana as the favorite with a 59.8 percent probability to win.

Hermosillo returns home for a two-game set against Guaymas beginning Friday, while Tijuana travels to face Jal. Astros for a pair of games starting the same night.
