Botafogo vs. UNICEUB

Preview: Botafogo Faces UNICEUB in Brasília

BRASÍLIA, Brazil (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Friday when the struggling Botafogo visits the surging UNICEUB in a Brazilian Novo Basquete Brasil (NBB) matchup at the Ginasio da ASCEB.

The teams enter with divergent trajectories. UNICEUB (16-8 across all competitions) sits among the league’s upper tier, having won three of its last four games. Its most recent result was a 93-87 road victory over Cruzeiro on Feb. 19. Botafogo (5-17), meanwhile, is mired near the bottom of the standings, having lost three straight and eight of its last ten. It fell 87-81 to Bauru in its last outing on Feb. 19.

The game features two of the league’s top individual performers. UNICEUB will rely on forward Daniel Von Haydin, who is coming off a 24-point performance against Cruzeiro and has averaged 20 points over his last three games. His versatility as a scorer and rebounder will be central to the home team’s attack.

Botafogo’s hopes will rest heavily on the play of guard Matheus Brito. Despite his team’s struggles, Brito has been a consistent bright spot, averaging 17.5 points and 4.3 assists over his last four contests. He posted 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists in the loss to Bauru.

For UNICEUB, maintaining its defensive intensity will be key after allowing 92 points in a narrow road loss to Minas on Feb. 17. The team has been strong at home, with recent decisive wins over Vasco da Gama and Corinthians.

Botafogo seeks to reverse a trend of defensive lapses, having allowed an average of 89.3 points during its three-game skid. Generating offense beyond Brito will be critical; Scott Machado (16 points vs. Bauru) is a secondary scoring option.

The matchup presents a clear opportunity for UNICEUB to solidify its standing, while Botafogo desperately needs a road upset to spark a late-season turnaround.
