Xalapa vs. Dorados
CHIHUAHUA, Mexico (Interstat) — Xalapa used a dominant fourth-quarter performance to complete a road sweep of Dorados with an 84-76 victory in a Mexican LNBP game Saturday night at Gimnasio Manuel Bernardo Aguirre.
After trailing for much of the first half, Xalapa outscored Dorados 26-10 in the final period to secure the win and improve to 10-6 across all competitions. Dorados fell to 9-7.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Dorados holding a 45-40 lead at halftime after a strong first quarter in which they scored 24 points. The teams played evenly in the third quarter, setting the stage for Xalapa’s decisive run.
Xalapa’s efficiency proved to be the difference. They scored 84 points on just 72 possessions for an offensive rating of 116.8, while Dorados managed 76 points on 76 possessions for a rating of 99.6. Xalapa’s success came from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line, where they shot 13 for 28 from three-point range and 19 for 23 on free throws. Dorados struggled from deep, making only 9 of 35 three-point attempts, and attempted far fewer free throws, making 7 of 9.
Fernando Zurbriggen led a balanced Xalapa attack with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 23 minutes. Sek Henry added 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Paul Stoll came off the bench to provide a significant spark, scoring 14 points in 18 minutes.
Dorados was led by Tyren Johnson, who scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Kenny Hasbrouck contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Akia Pruitt added 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks.
The victory gives Xalapa a two-game winning streak after they defeated the same Dorados team 90-73 on Friday night. Dorados, meanwhile, has lost two straight after winning their previous four games.
The result defied the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 79-74 win for Dorados, though its ELO system had given Xalapa a 61.3 percent chance to win.
Xalapa will next host Soles for a two-game series starting Friday. Dorados hits the road for a two-game set against San Luis Potosi, also beginning Friday.
