Lynx dominate Wings 100‑76 behind balanced attack
MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — The Minnesota Lynx used a dominant first-half blitz and a balanced scoring attack to defeat the Dallas Wings 100-76 on Tuesday night at Target Center, extending their winning streak to five games and improving to 10-2 on the season before a crowd of 10,907.
The Lynx raced to a 30-18 lead after the opening quarter and expanded the margin to 58-38 by halftime, overwhelming the Wings with precision shooting and relentless defensive pressure. Minnesota shot a blistering percentage from the floor in the first half, while holding Dallas to just 38 points on poor efficiency. The Wings, who entered the game with a 7-4 record, never recovered from the early deficit despite a spirited third-quarter push.
Courtney Williams led the Lynx with a steady all-around performance, scoring critical baskets in transition and from midrange. She finished with a game-high scoring total and added multiple assists, steals and rebounds. Williams hit a flurry of jump shots in the first quarter, including an 18-foot running pullup and a 15-foot pullup, helping Minnesota build its early cushion. Backcourt mate Kayla McBride also contributed heavily, knocking down three-pointers and free throws while providing veteran leadership.
Olivia Miles directed the Minnesota offense with poise, repeatedly finding teammates for easy looks and scoring herself when necessary. Miles made several free throws in the second quarter and added a 25-foot three-pointer late in the half that extended the Lynx lead. Natasha Howard imposed her will inside, scoring on layups and post moves while pulling down defensive rebounds and blocking shots. Howard’s presence in the paint forced Dallas to settle for contested jumpers.
The Wings struggled to find consistent offense against a Lynx defense that switched effectively and contested nearly every shot. Paige Bueckers scored a team-high for Dallas, connecting on a variety of midrange jumpers and a three-pointer in the second quarter. Arike Ogunbowale added points from the free throw line and hit a couple of three-pointers, but she was hounded by Minnesota’s perimeter defenders and committed several turnovers. Jessica Shepard contributed inside with layups and rebounds, but the Wings could not keep pace.
The most critical stretch of the game occurred in the second quarter after Dallas had trimmed the lead to single digits late in the first period. Minnesota responded with a 12-2 run to push the lead to 20 points. Courtney Williams started the burst with a pullup jumper, then Natasha Howard scored on a reverse layup. Olivia Miles followed with a three-pointer, and Kayla McBride added a technical free throw after Arike Ogunbowale was assessed a technical foul. The sequence effectively broke Dallas’s spirit and forced the Wings to play catch-up the rest of the night.
Dallas showed life in the third quarter, outscoring Minnesota 22-17 and cutting the deficit to 75-60 entering the final period. Azzi Fudd hit two three-pointers early in the third, and Jessica Shepard scored consecutive layups to ignite a brief run. But the Lynx answered each time, with Kayla McBride hitting a midrange jumper and Natasha Howard converting a three-point play off a foul. Minnesota’s depth proved decisive as reserves such as Anastasiia Olairi Kosu and Nia Coffey contributed key baskets.
In the fourth quarter, the Lynx put the game away with a 25-16 advantage. Maya Caldwell scored on a pullup jumper, and Natasha Howard added a layup and free throw. Olivia Miles continued to attack the basket and knock down free throws. The Wings attempted to rally behind Paige Bueckers and Costanza Verona, who scored a pullup jumper late, but Minnesota’s lead never dipped below 20 points. Teaira McCowan entered the game in the fourth and grabbed a defensive rebound, while Antonia Delaere added a driving floating jump shot.
Costanza Verona of Dallas, a guard from Palermo, Italy, made her presence felt in limited minutes, hitting a 15-foot pullup jumper in the fourth quarter and adding an assist. Maya Caldwell of Minnesota, a guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, contributed a key second-quarter steal and a late free throw. Teaira McCowan, the 6-7 center from Brenham, Texas, provided a physical presence inside. Anastasiia Olairi Kosu, a forward from Kursk, Russia, scored six points and pulled down multiple offensive rebounds. Antonia Delaere of Antwerp, Belgium, added a basket and an assist. Olivia Miles of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, finished with a strong all-around line. Courtney Williams of Folkston, Georgia, led the Lynx in scoring. Kayla McBride contributed across the board. Nia Coffey of Saint Paul, Minnesota, grabbed several defensive rebounds and scored on a driving layup. Natasha Howard anchored the frontcourt.
