Portland vs. New York

NEW YORK (Interstat) — The Portland Fire and New York Liberty, both 3-3, meet Monday night at Barclays Center in the third installment of a two-week series that has already delivered a split and plenty of drama.

The teams have traded wins in their previous two matchups. Portland claimed a 98-96 home victory on May 12, but New York responded with a 100-82 rout in Portland on May 14. Monday’s game gives the Liberty a chance to seize the season-series edge on its home floor.

Portland forward Emily Engstler has been a key factor in the series. In the May 14 loss, she posted 11 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes. In the May 12 victory, she contributed six points, three rebounds and three blocks. Over her last six games overall, Engstler is averaging 9.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. She is coming off her best outing of the season: 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in Saturday’s 99-80 win at Toronto.

New York has struggled offensively in its past two games. After a 100-point outburst against Portland, the Liberty managed just 76 points in a home loss to Dallas on Sunday, 91-76. Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Satou Sabally are expected to lead the Liberty’s response.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 92-79 New York victory.

After Monday, Portland faces a quick turnaround with consecutive home games against Connecticut on Tuesday and Wednesday. New York hosts Phoenix on Tuesday. Both teams are seeking separation in a crowded early-season standings picture.
