Phoenix vs. Golden State

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The Phoenix Mercury and Golden State Valkyries, both undefeated to start the 2026 WNBA season, meet Sunday at Chase Center in an early test of title credentials.

Phoenix (1-0) enters following a 99-66 rout of the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday. Forward Alyssa Thomas logged 20 points, six rebounds and nine assists in 26 minutes, earning player of the game honors. Forward Natasha Mack added a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds, and forward DeWanna Bonner contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Mercury will look to maintain defensive intensity against a Golden State team that opened its campaign with a 91-80 victory over the Seattle Storm on Friday. Guard Veronica Burton led the Valkyries with 16 points, six assists and two rebounds in 31 minutes. Forward Kayla Thornton added 13 points and eight rebounds, and forward Janelle Salaun scored a team-high 20 points.

Thomas, a perennial MVP candidate, has been the engine of Phoenix’s offense, capable of stuffing the stat sheet in points, rebounds and assists. Her ability to facilitate could test a Golden State defense still finding its identity after one game.

Burton, meanwhile, has emerged as a primary ball handler and scoring threat for the Valkyries. Her floor generalship against Seattle’s pressure defense impressed coach Natalie Nakase, who will likely lean on her to control tempo again Sunday.

Both teams are chasing early momentum. Phoenix faces a quick turnaround with a Monday home game against Minnesota, while Golden State hosts Chicago on Wednesday. Sunday’s outcome could set the tone for either side’s upcoming stretch.

Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. PDT at Chase Center.
