Liberty outlast Mystics 98‑93 in overtime thriller

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — Marine Johannes hit six 3-pointers and scored 25 points, Breanna Stewart added 23 points and nine rebounds, and the New York Liberty outlasted the Washington Mystics 98-93 in overtime Sunday at CareFirst Arena.

Rookie Pauline Astier shot 6 of 10 from the field and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line to finish with 18 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Liberty, who improved to 2-0. Jonquel Jones contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. Stewart missed a potential winning jumper at the end of regulation, but New York dominated the extra period to secure the victory.

New York led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter, thanks in part to a 31-point outburst in the period. But Washington chipped away, outscoring the Liberty 21-17 in the third quarter and 16-13 in the fourth to force overtime tied at 85.

The Mystics had a chance to win in regulation after Kiki Iriafen’s layup with 15.7 seconds left tied the score. Stewart’s 13-foot jumper at the buzzer rimmed out, sending the game to an extra five minutes.

In overtime, New York seized control early. After Washington’s Shakira Austin split a pair of free throws, Johannes drilled a 24-foot 3-pointer off an assist from Rebekah Gardner to put the Liberty ahead 93-89 with 1:58 to play. Washington turned the ball over on the next possession, and Astier converted a running layup to stretch the lead to six. The Mystics never got closer than three the rest of the way.

Astier made four free throws in the final 19.3 seconds to seal the win. Washington’s Sonia Citron hit one of two free throws with 13.5 seconds left, but Astier answered with two more from the line. The Mystics had a final chance, but Citron missed a 3-pointer and Alex Wilson’s 28-foot try at the buzzer was off the mark.

Johannes shot 9 of 17 from the field, including 6 of 12 from beyond the arc, and added two assists in 37 minutes. Stewart played 39 minutes, shooting 8 of 21 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line to go with four assists and two blocks.

Astier’s performance was critical for New York, especially in the fourth quarter and overtime. The rookie from France scored seven of her 18 points after regulation. She also had two steals, including one that led to her own layup in overtime.

For Washington, Iriafen recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds in 28 minutes. She shot 7 of 15 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line, with three assists. Austin added 16 points and 10 rebounds, but shot just 5 of 13 from the field and missed three of her six free throws. Citron scored 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting, making all six of her free throws, and grabbed five rebounds.

The Mystics (1-1) controlled the glass, grabbing 19 offensive rebounds to New York’s eight. That advantage led to 18 second-chance points. But Washington shot only 5 of 26 from 3-point range, while the Liberty connected on 9 of 27 from deep.

New York’s offense was efficient despite the high foul count. The Liberty committed 31 fouls to Washington’s 27, but the Mystics made just 20 of 29 free throws. New York hit 23 of 28 from the line.

The game featured several key sequences. In the first quarter, New York jumped to an early lead behind Johannes’ shooting. She hit a 23-foot 3-pointer off a Stewart assist at the 7:22 mark to make it 13-11, and the Liberty never trailed again in the half.

Washington had a strong opening, scoring 31 points in the first quarter on 50 percent shooting. Iriafen scored eight points in the period, including a reverse layup and a driving layup. But New York answered with 24 points, keyed by Astier’s driving layup and a 3-pointer from Julie Vanloo at the buzzer.

The Liberty took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Mystics 31-17. Stewart scored eight points in the period, including a turnaround jumper and a driving floater. Johannes added 12 points in the quarter, hitting two 3-pointers. New York led 55-48 at halftime.

Washington rallied in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 72-69 heading into the fourth. Iriafen and Austin combined for 12 points in the period, while the Mystics defense held New York to 17 points.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle. New York led 80-76 after Johannes’ driving layup with 1:32 left, but Cassandre Prosper answered with a layup for Washington. Stewart hit a jumper with 38.2 seconds to put the Liberty up 85-81, but Rori Harmon drove and kicked to Iriafen for a layup with 15.7 seconds left, tying the game and setting up Stewart’s miss.

In overtime, New York’s defense clamped down, holding Washington to 8 points on 3-of-10 shooting. The Mystics turned the ball over four times in the extra period, including a bad pass by Alex Wilson that led to Astier’s decisive layup.

Stewart, the reigning league MVP, has started the season strong. She scored 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Liberty’s season-opening win over Connecticut on Friday. Against Washington, she added four assists and two blocks despite shooting struggles from deep, missing all five of her 3-point attempts.

Jones, the former league MVP from the Bahamas, contributed across the board in 24 minutes. She shot 4 of 8 from the field, including a 3-pointer, and made 4 of 5 free throws.

For Washington, Georgia Amoore dished out seven assists but scored only 7 points on 3-of-8 shooting. The Mystics will look to bounce back when they visit Indiana on Friday.

New York’s next game is at Portland on Monday, beginning a three-game road trip against the Fire.

In pregame projections, Interstat’s ELO system gave New York a 66.00 percent probability to win. The Liberty were installed as a 6.5-point favorite. The total of 98 points went over the over-under line of 158.5.
