Long Island Shuts Out Post Behind Czukoski’s 16 Saves
WATERBURY, Conn. (Interstat) — Kayla Czukoski made 16 saves and Long Island scored three unanswered goals to defeat Post 3-0 in a women’s NCAA Division I hockey game Friday at Drubner Center. The announced attendance was 50. Long Island, the visiting team, improved to 1-2. Post, the home team, fell to 1-5. The Sharks won for the first time this season after opening with two losses to New Hampshire. The victory came on the road and snapped a two-game losing streak. The Eagles remained winless at home after a difficult early-season stretch.
Czukoski was the top star for Long Island. She stopped all 16 shots she faced to earn the win. In her previous start, she made 37 saves on 39 shots in a loss to New Hampshire. Against Post, she was rarely beaten, and the Sharks’ defense limited the Eagles’ chances throughout the night.
Parker Small led the Long Island offense with two goals on three shots. Small opened the scoring at 12:45 of the first period, with assists from Crosby Wildfong and Lauren Karl. She then closed the scoring at 58:22 of the third period. Drew Dyczkowski scored Long Island’s other goal at 54:24 of the third period, assisted by Grace Babington and Laura Nagy. Dyczkowski, a right wing from Milford, Mich., who is 5-foot-5 and previously played at Hartland, finished with five shots.
Babington, a 5-foot-10 center who previously played at Bedford, recorded one assist on two shots. Karl, a 5-foot-8 defender who previously played at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, had one assist on one shot. Wildfong, a 5-foot-2 right wing who previously played at Powers Catholic, contributed one assist, two shots and two penalty minutes. Nagy, a 5-foot-9 defender who previously played at Edge School, added one assist on one shot. Ashley Mandeville had four shots, Saga Odebrant had two shots, and Evelyn Latka did not record a point.
Post’s penalty trouble helped Long Island maintain pressure. Peyton Tully was called for bodychecking twice, at 07:59 of the first period and 27:59 of the second. Jodie Rose received a slashing penalty at 22:16 of the second. Callie Peterson was whistled for tripping at 41:08 of the third, and Celena Mickevicius was called for tripping at 44:47 of the third. Long Island also took two penalties. Crosby Wildfong was sent off for holding the stick at 10:02 of the first, and Kristen Kiggen received a hooking penalty at 31:36 of the second. The Sharks killed off both Long Island penalties and kept Post off the scoreboard.
Long Island took a 1-0 lead in the first period and carried it into the third. The Sharks then put the game away with two late goals. Dyczkowski doubled the lead at 54:24, and Small added the final goal at 58:22. Post could not answer against Czukoski and finished with no goals on 16 shots. The Eagles had several power-play opportunities but could not convert. Long Island finished with a 3-0 victory.
The Sharks will look to build on the win in their next game. Post will try to regroup after its fifth loss in six games. The teams are scheduled to meet again in their next scheduled game at Long Island. Long Island’s next several games include contests against Sacred Heart, Delaware, Saint Michael’s and Assumption. Post’s upcoming schedule includes games against Stonehill, Merrimack, Franklin Pierce and Saint Michael’s. Both teams remain in the early portion of their NCAA Division I schedules.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Long Island 3, Post 1. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Long Island with a 75.9 percent probability to win. The actual result was a shutout for the Sharks.
