Northeastern at Minnesota
Preview: Northeastern Huskies at Minnesota Golden Gophers
MINNEAPOLIS (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s top offenses will clash when the Northeastern Huskies visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a marquee nonconference women’s college hockey matchup Saturday at Mariucci Arena.
The Huskies (28-8-1), riding a potent attack, face a Golden Gophers squad (26-11-1) looking to rebound on home ice. Interstat’s game simulator projects a high-scoring affair, favoring Minnesota 5-4.
Northeastern enters having won seven of its last nine, though it is coming off a 2-1 home loss to Connecticut on March 8. The Huskies’ offense is spearheaded by dynamic forward Morgan Jackson. The junior is in strong form, recording a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over Vermont on March 3 and firing a season-high 13 shots on goal in the recent loss to UConn.
Minnesota seeks to snap a two-game skid after being shut out 4-0 at Ohio State on March 5. The Golden Gophers’ fortunes often hinge on the play of senior star Abbey Murphy. Murphy was held off the scoresheet in the loss to the Buckeyes but was dominant in the previous series against St. Cloud State, netting two goals and an assist across two victories.
The matchup features a contrast in recent results. Northeastern has been consistently strong in tight games, with its last five contests decided by one goal. Minnesota has shown explosive scoring ability, tallying six goals in a win on March 1, but has also been prone to recent offensive droughts.
Defensively, the Huskies will aim to contain Murphy and Minnesota’s deep forward group. The Golden Gophers must find an answer for Jackson and a Northeastern power play that has been a key factor in its success. Goaltending may prove decisive, with Minnesota’s Hannah Clark coming off a 29-save performance in the loss to Ohio State.
Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. CDT Saturday. The game is a final regular-season tune-up for both programs before NCAA tournament selections are announced.
