Union at Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — The Yale Bulldogs, led by a dominant four-point performance from Jordan Ray, overwhelmed the Union Garnet Chargers 6-1 in a women’s NCAA Division I hockey game Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink.
A crowd of 522 watched the No. 7-ranked Bulldogs seize control early, scoring four times in the first period to effectively decide the contest before the first intermission. The victory improved Yale’s record to 25-7-1 overall, while Union fell to 11-21-3.
Yale’s offensive explosion began just over six minutes into the game. Carina DiAntonio opened the scoring at the 6:17 mark, converting assists from Molly Boyle and Gracie Gilkyson. The Bulldogs capitalized on a chaotic sequence midway through the period where both teams took minor penalties, creating four-on-four hockey. Defenseman Molly Boyle made it 2-0 at 8:52 on a goal assisted by Gilkyson and Ray.
The onslaught continued as Kennedy Walker and Stephanie Stainton added goals at 10:32 and 16:55, respectively, to give Yale a commanding 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. Gilkyson and Ray each earned their second assists of the period on Walker’s goal.
Union goaltender Monja Wagner, named her team’s top star, kept the score from escalating further with 21 saves against 22 shots after the first period. She finished with 21 saves total.
The Garnet Chargers found a brief response in the second period. After Yale’s Boyle netted her second goal of the game on the power play at 16:26 to extend the lead to 5-0, Union broke through on the scoreboard. Reanna Loberg scored her first goal of the season at 18:19, with assists from Hayley Kelleher and Jill Willis, to cut the deficit to 5-1.
Any momentum for Union was short-lived. Yale’s top line sealed the victory late in the third period when center Jordan Ray scored an even-strength goal at 18:59, with DiAntonio and Stainton providing the helpers. Ray finished with a goal and three assists, while Boyle had two goals and an assist. Gilkyson, a defenseman, quarterbacked the offense with four assists.
Yale goaltender Anna Phillips earned the win with 17 saves on 18 shots. The Bulldogs’ defense limited Union to just 18 total shots, with Union forwards Maddie Leaney and Megan Duplantie managing only one and two shots, respectively.
The game was a clean affair with only six minor penalties called, three per side. The teams were assessed matching roughing penalties early in the third period.
The result aligned closely with pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 5-1 Yale victory, and its ELO rating system gave the Bulldogs an 83 percent probability to win.
The Bulldogs have now won three straight meetings against Union this season, following a 4-2 win Friday and a 6-3 victory on Jan. 2. Yale has outscored Union 15-5 in those three contests.
Both teams conclude their regular-season series Sunday afternoon at Ingalls Rink.
