Syd. Flames vs. Geelong

GEELONG, Australia (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in a difficult season will meet Friday when the Geelong Supercats host the Sydney Flames in an NBL One women’s basketball matchup.

The game at Geelong Arena pits teams with a combined 10-27 record across all competitions. The visiting Flames (6-13) have shown recent flashes, winning three of their last six, while the Supercats (4-14) have dropped eight of their last nine.

Sydney holds a psychological edge, having won both meetings this season: 85-77 in Geelong on Oct. 18 and a nail-biting 97-94 home victory on Nov. 26. The Flames are coming off a 76-65 road loss to Adelaide on Tuesday, despite 18 points from Agnes Emma-Nnopu and 17 points and nine rebounds from star forward Keely Froling.

Froling remains the consistent centerpiece for Sydney, averaging 13.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists over her last six games. Her versatility will be key against Geelong’s interior presence.

The Supercats, routed 91-67 by Townsville last Friday, will lean on forward Mackenzie Holmes. She is coming off a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double in that loss and has been a dominant force at times, including a 30-point, 14-rebound performance in a win at Townsville on Jan. 6. Guard play will also be crucial, with Lilly Rotunno and Shyla Heal each scoring 15 in the team’s last outing.

Both teams have struggled defensively, with each allowing an average of over 80 points per game in recent outings. The matchup may hinge on which squad can string together stops and capitalize on the other’s inconsistencies.

For Geelong, it’s a chance to halt a four-game home losing streak. For Sydney, it’s an opportunity to build a winning streak and climb the standings. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. local time.
