IK Eos vs. Ostersund
Preview: IK Eos at Ostersund, Women’s Professional Basketball
OSTERSUND, Sweden (Interstat) — A rematch of a recent shootout highlights the Swedish women’s professional basketball slate Saturday as Ostersund hosts IK Eos.
The teams last met on Feb. 14, with Ostersund escaping with a 95-89 road victory. That result typified the season trajectories for both clubs. Ostersund enters with a 14-8 record across all competitions, positioning itself in the upper tier of the standings. IK Eos, meanwhile, has struggled to an 8-14 mark.
The home team will look to replicate its February offensive success, fueled by forward Emilia Forss. She dominated the last matchup against Eos, scoring 25 points and grabbing eight rebounds in 27 minutes. Forss is coming off an efficient 20-point performance in just 23 minutes during a 109-51 rout of RIG Lulea on Feb. 28.
IK Eos counters with forward Azana Baines, who posted a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds) in the loss to Ostersund last month. Baines is in stellar form, averaging 17.3 points and 10.8 rebounds over her last four games. She is fresh off a dominant 19-point, 14-rebound effort in an 86-48 road win over Visby on March 1, Eos’s most recent contest.
That victory over Visby snapped a three-game losing streak for Eos, which included the narrow defeat to Ostersund. Consistency has been an issue, as the win followed a 92-85 home loss to Malbas on Feb. 24.
Ostersund’s form has been strong, with four wins in its last five outings. The lone blemish was a 104-72 road loss to Lulea on Feb. 27, but the team responded emphatically with its 58-point win the following day.
The matchup hinges on Ostersund’s high-powered offense, which has scored 95 or more points twice in recent weeks, against an Eos team seeking defensive answers. Containing Forss will be a primary concern for the visitors, while Ostersund must find a way to slow Baines, who has been a consistent force on both ends of the floor.
Tip-off is set for Saturday in Ostersund.
