Oaklands vs. Newcastle

NEWCASTLE, United Kingdom (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season matchup in British women’s professional basketball tips off Saturday as the surging Newcastle hosts the .500 Oaklands at Newcastle.

Newcastle (5-1) enters the contest atop the standings, looking to rebound from its first and only loss of the season, a 115-70 road defeat to Caledonia on Dec. 21. Prior to that stumble, Newcastle had opened the campaign with five consecutive victories, including decisive wins over Nottingham and London.

Oaklands (3-3) seeks consistency after alternating wins and losses through its first six games. The visitors are coming off a 74-82 loss at Manchester on Dec. 21, despite a strong all-around performance from forward Danielle McCray, who posted 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

McCray, averaging a near double-double in recent outings, will be a focal point for Oaklands. Her versatility will be tested against Newcastle’s standout, Shanique Lucas. The forward is coming off a 15-point, eight-rebound, three-assist effort in the loss to Caledonia and has been a consistent force, including a 20-point, eight-rebound, six-assist performance in a win over Cardiff on Dec. 7.

The matchup inside could be decisive. Oaklands’ center Lavinia Da Silva, who had 12 points, six rebounds and three assists against Manchester, will contend with a Newcastle frontcourt that features Zoe Willis, who grabbed eight rebounds to go with 16 points in the team’s last outing.

Newcastle’s home-court advantage has been significant, with the team winning all three of its games in Newcastle this season by an average margin of 18 points. Oaklands, however, has shown it can win on the road, having secured a victory at Nottingham last month.

Historically, Newcastle’s defense has keyed its success, holding opponents to an average of 66 points in its five wins. Oaklands’ offense, which scored 93 points in a season-opening win over London but was held to 61 in a loss at Sheffield, will need to find rhythm against that pressure.

This contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the clubs, with the rematch scheduled for April 18 in Oaklands. Saturday’s result will either solidify Newcastle’s place at the top or allow Oaklands to climb back toward the upper tier of the table.

Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026, in Newcastle.
