Matelica vs. Treviso
TREVISO, Italy (Interstat) — A clash of starkly contrasting fortunes highlights Italy’s women’s Serie A1 basketball schedule Saturday as first-place Matelica visits struggling Treviso.
The matchup at PalaVerde in Treviso pits a powerhouse against a perennial struggler. Matelica arrives with an 18-4 record across all competitions, having won 10 of its last 12 games. Treviso, meanwhile, languishes at 2-19 and is mired in a seven-game losing streak.
Their previous meeting this season underscored the gap between the clubs. On Dec. 13, Matelica dominated Treviso 61-43 on its home floor.
Matelica is led by versatile guard Benedetta Gramaccioni, who is coming off a strong all-around performance in a 70-41 rout of Vicenza on Wednesday. In that victory, Gramaccioni posted 7 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists in 29 minutes. She has been a consistent contributor, including a 19-point outing in a late-February loss to Umbertide.
Treviso will rely on the scoring prowess of Matilde Baron, who has been a bright spot during a difficult season. Baron poured in 29 points in a lopsided loss to Alpo on March 14 and followed that with 17 points and 6 rebounds in a defeat to Basket Alcamo. Her ability to generate offense will be critical against Matelica’s stout defense, which held Vicenza to 41 points in its last outing.
For Treviso, the challenge is monumental. The team has allowed an average of 86.4 points per game during its current seven-game skid, including a 129-point concession to Alpo. Slowing down a balanced Matelica attack, which also features recent contributors like Olga Trzeciak (14 points vs. Vicenza) and Chiara Bacchini (15 points), will be the primary focus.
Matelica seeks to maintain its position atop the standings and continue its momentum before hosting Faenza next Friday. Treviso, searching for just its third win of the campaign, looks to find a competitive spark before a road trip to Bolzano on April 3.
Tip-off is set for Saturday evening, with Matelica a heavy favorite to sweep the season series.
