Preview: Brescia Looks to Build Momentum Against Derthona in Italy A1 Women’s Basketball

SCRIVIA, Italy (Interstat) — Two teams seeking consistency will meet Saturday when Brescia visits Derthona in an Italy A1 women’s professional basketball matchup at PalaCastagnola in Scrivia.

Both sides enter the contest with sub-.500 records across all competitions. Brescia (2-6) snapped a two-game skid with a 75-71 home victory over Battipaglia on Wednesday. Derthona (3-5) looks to rebound from a 79-66 road loss to powerhouse Schio on the same date.

The game features a compelling frontcourt duel between two of the league’s top performers. Brescia will rely heavily on center Anna Winkowska, who is coming off a dominant performance. In the win over Battipaglia, she logged 38 minutes, scoring 24 points and grabbing 15 rebounds with two blocks. Over her last four games, Winkowska is averaging 17.8 points and 6.5 rebounds. She will need support from guards Sofia Frustaci and Marzia Tagliamento, who combined for 30 points and 13 assists on Wednesday.

Derthona counters with forward Pallas Kunaiyi Akpanah, a consistent double-double threat. In her last three outings, she averaged 21.0 points and 14.0 rebounds, including a 27-point, 16-rebound effort in a win over San Martino on Nov. 23. In the loss to Schio, Akpanah posted 15 points and 13 rebounds. Her interior battle with Winkowska will be pivotal.

Derthona holds a slight edge in the standings and won the earlier meeting this season, 85-83 at Battipaglia on Nov. 2, though that game did not involve Brescia. Historically, Derthona has shown a more potent offense, but has struggled defensively, allowing an average of 74.6 points in its five losses.

For Brescia, road games have been a particular challenge, including a 39-point loss at Schio and a 22-point defeat at Dinamo Sassari. Securing a win away from home would mark significant progress.

The matchup represents a critical opportunity for both clubs to gain footing in the mid-table standings before the schedule continues later in December. Following this game, Brescia hosts Roseto on Dec. 14, while Derthona travels to face Broni the same day.
