Schio vs. San Giovanni
Eurocup Women Showdown Features Italian Powers Schio, San Giovanni
SESTO SAN GIOVANNI, Italy (Interstat) — A compelling Eurocup Women clash tips off here Sunday as the visiting Famila Wuber Schio, one of Europe’s hottest teams, faces a stern road test against Passalacqua Ragusa San Giovanni.
Schio (12-2 overall) arrives in dominant form, having won eight consecutive games across all competitions. Their latest victory was a 79-66 decision over Derthona on Wednesday. In that contest, Schio showcased a balanced attack with forwards Jessica Shepard (19 points, 8 rebounds) and Cecilia Zandalasini (19 points) leading the way, while Maria Conde dished out 9 assists.
Shepard, the American forward, has been particularly formidable. Over her last three games, she is averaging 20.7 points and 10.3 rebounds, including a 22-point, 15-rebound performance against Flammes on Nov. 26.
San Giovanni (8-6) looks to rebound from a narrow 69-65 road loss to Dinamo Sassari on Wednesday. Despite the defeat, guard Sara Roumy posted 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists in 38 minutes. Roumy has been a consistent offensive catalyst, scoring 16 or more points in four of her last five outings.
The matchup presents a stark contrast in momentum. Schio’s current win streak includes decisive victories over Eurocup rivals like Sopron (84-69) and Flammes (74-57). San Giovanni’s season has been more inconsistent, with notable wins against Sepsi SIC (78-43) and Broni (76-58) mixed with double-digit losses to teams like Mechelen.
San Giovanni will rely on home-court advantage at PalaCarneri in Sesto San Giovanni, where they hold a 4-2 record this season. Schio, however, has proven potent on the road, winning key contests at Sopron and Campobasso earlier this season.
This game is the first of two critical December fixtures for San Giovanni, which hosts Spanish side Baxi Ferrol next Thursday. Schio continues a busy stretch, traveling to face Eurocup group rival Girona next Wednesday.
Sunday’s contest will hinge on San Giovanni’s ability to contain Schio’s multifaceted frontcourt, led by Shepard, while finding enough production beyond Roumy to keep pace with one of the tournament’s highest-scoring teams.
