Pontevedra vs. Mariscos
Preview: Pontevedra Faces Mariscos in LF Women’s Basketball Clash
VILAGARCIA AROUSA, Spain (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Saturday when the struggling Pontevedra women’s basketball team visits the surging Mariscos in a Spain LF matchup at Vilagarcia Arousa.
The game pits a Mariscos squad (13-6) firmly in the upper tier of the standings against a Pontevedra side (5-16) mired in a difficult season. Mariscos has won four of its last five games, including a dominant 92-62 road victory over Ekke on March 7. Pontevedra, meanwhile, has lost four straight and eight of its last nine.
Mariscos will be fueled by forward Gara Jorge, who has been a consistent double-double threat. In her last four games, she averaged 12.3 points and 9.0 rebounds, including a 13-point, 12-rebound performance in a win over Sanfer on Feb. 28. She is complemented by a deep roster; in the win over Ekke, Cristina Loureiro added 19 points and Maria Angulo scored 12.
Pontevedra’s hopes will rest heavily on guard Maria Gonzalez, who is coming off a strong 14-point, 7-rebound effort in a narrow 74-70 loss to Maristas on March 7. Gonzalez has been a bright spot during the losing streak, scoring in double figures in three of the last four contests.
The teams’ previous meeting this season provides a glimmer of hope for the visitors. On Nov. 29, Pontevedra secured a 77-60 home victory over Mariscos. Replicating that result on the road will be a formidable challenge against a Mariscos team that has since found its rhythm and boasts a 7-2 record at home.
For Pontevedra, breaking its recent trend of offensive struggles will be critical; the team has failed to reach 65 points in six of its last seven games. Mariscos, which has scored 74 or more points in four of its last five outings, will look to control the tempo and exploit its significant advantage in the standings.
Saturday’s contest is the first of a four-game stretch to close the regular season for both clubs.
