Mataro vs. Sanfer
Preview: Mataro and Sanfer Meet in Pivotal Women’s Basketball Clash
AVILES, Spain (Interstat) — A critical matchup in the Spain LF women’s professional basketball league tips off Saturday when Mataro visits Sanfer at Aviles Arena.
Both teams enter the 7 p.m. local time contest with identical 13-12 records across all competitions, making this a pivotal game for postseason positioning. The season series is split 1-0 in favor of Mataro, which earned a narrow 56-54 home victory on Jan. 10.
Mataro looks to bounce back from a last-second 60-58 road loss to Pontevedra on April 11. In that defeat, guard Helena Lopez led all scorers with 19 points. Lopez, the team’s primary offensive catalyst, has been inconsistent lately, following a 2-point outing in a March 28 loss with 18 points in a win on March 21. Her scoring will be vital against Sanfer’s interior defense.
That defense is anchored by forward Cristina Ugochukwu, Sanfer’s player to watch. Ugochukwu is a relentless rebounder, pulling down 16 boards in the team’s most recent game, a 69-59 loss at Maresme on April 11. She has recorded three double-doubles in her last four appearances, including an 11-point, 14-rebound, 6-assist performance in a win on March 21.
Sanfer has struggled with offensive consistency, scoring 45 points in a March 28 loss before putting up 76 in a win on April 2. They will rely on Ugochukwu and guards Esther Sevilla and Sara Fraile, who combined for 28 points in the last outing.
Mataro’s recent form has also been uneven, with losses in two of its last three games. Beyond Lopez, production from Paula Casadevall and Marina Laborda, who added 15 points against Pontevedra, will be needed.
The game promises a contrast in styles: Mataro’s perimeter scoring against Sanfer’s interior presence and rebounding strength. With both teams locked in the mid-table standings, Saturday’s result could prove decisive for their playoff aspirations.
