Split vs. Sibenik
SIBENIK, Croatia (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Saturday when the powerhouse Sibenik women’s professional basketball team hosts struggling Split in Croatian league action.
Sibenik (10-2) enters the contest at the top of the standings, while Split (1-11) languishes at the bottom. The teams’ previous meeting this season underscored the gap, as Sibenik routed Split 84-48 on Oct. 11.
The home team is led by dynamic guard Bendu Yeaney, who is coming off a monumental performance in a narrow road loss. Despite Sibenik falling 74-67 at Rijeka on Jan. 10, Yeaney poured in 28 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and added a block in 40 minutes of action. Her consistent scoring and all-around play make her the focal point of a deep Sibenik roster that has only stumbled twice this campaign.
Split, mired in an extended slump, will look to guard Lara Pavela for a spark. Pavela scored 14 points in Split’s most recent outing, a 103-51 drubbing by Tresnjevka on Jan. 10. She also logged 40 minutes and contributed 17 points and 4 assists in a close loss to KASL Split in December, demonstrating her capacity to carry a heavy load.
Split’s season has been defined by offensive struggles, failing to reach 60 points in seven of its 11 losses. Defensively, the team has allowed 90 or more points five times. Sibenik, conversely, boasts a potent attack that has scored 84 points or more in eight games, including the earlier win over Split.
The matchup presents a clear opportunity for Sibenik to rebound from its rare loss and solidify its position atop the table. For Split, it is a daunting challenge to find cohesion and competitiveness against the league’s best. Tipoff is set for Saturday at Sibenik’s home court in Sibenik, Croatia.
