AVELLANEDA, Argentina (Interstat) — Independiente defeated visiting El Bigua 68-63 on Sunday in a women’s professional basketball game, holding off a fourth-quarter comeback. Independiente started fast and led 21-16 after the first quarter. The home team pushed its advantage to 41-32 at halftime and carried a 57-48 lead into the fourth. El Bigua scored 16 points in each of the first three quarters, then added 15 in the fourth. Independiente scored 21 in the opening quarter, 20 in the second, 16 in the third and 11 in the final period. El Bigua’s late push trimmed the margin, but Independiente protected its lead. El Bigua is now 0-1. Independiente is now 1-0. The game opened the season for both clubs. El Bigua will next host Quilmes on Friday, then Union Bahia on Thursday.
