GIRONA, Spain (Interstat) — Two of the top teams in Spain’s LF women’s professional basketball league meet Saturday when Leon visits GEiEG at Girona.

Leon (21-8) holds a one-game edge over GEiEG (20-8) in the overall standings, but the home team will look to even the season series after falling 83-67 on May 16. That victory gave Leon a 4-1 record in its last five games, while GEiEG has lost three of its last four.

Forward Katiana Benitez has been Leon’s most consistent performer. In the May 16 win over GEiEG, she played 30 minutes and recorded 17 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Benitez followed that with 9 points and 9 rebounds in a 78-72 win over Claret Valencia on May 9, and 16 points and 9 rebounds in a 67-52 victory at Claret Valencia on May 2. She has averaged 14 points and 10.3 rebounds over her last three outings.

For GEiEG, guard Marina Melero led all scorers in the May 16 loss with 25 points, three rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes. However, she struggled in a 71-58 loss to Maristas on May 2, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists on 30 minutes. Melero will need support from forward Vanessa Gonzalez, who contributed six points, three rebounds, four assists and two blocks in the previous meeting, and guard Julia Fernandez, who added 12 points and four rebounds.

Leon’s recent results include a 78-72 home win over Claret Valencia on May 9 and a 67-52 road win over the same opponent on May 2. The team’s only loss in its last five games came April 18 at Maristas, 72-71. Other victories in that span: 72-66 over Ausarta on April 11, 77-59 over Maresme on March 21, and 60-46 over TGN Basquet on March 14.

GEiEG’s form has been uneven. After the May 16 loss, the team fell 73-52 at Maristas on May 9 and lost 71-58 at home to Maristas on May 2. Positive results include an 80-52 win at Gran Canaria II on April 12 and a 74-36 rout of Viladecans on April 18.

Saturday’s game tips off at a time to be determined. It marks the second of three scheduled meetings between the teams this season; the final matchup has yet to be announced. Both squads are vying for position in the playoff race, with Leon holding a slim edge in the standings and the head-to-head tiebreaker after the May 16 victory.
