Zaragoza vs. Valencia

VALENCIA, Spain (Interstat) — The Spain LF’s top two teams clash Sunday when Zaragoza visits Valencia at 7 p.m. local time, just three days after Valencia handed the league leaders a home defeat.

Zaragoza (41-12 across all competitions) holds a commanding overall record but has dropped its past two meetings with Valencia (31-14), including an 81-73 loss Thursday in Zaragoza. That defeat snapped Zaragoza’s five-game winning streak, though the team bounced back with a 67-56 win over Avenida on May 10.

Valencia enters on a three-game winning streak, including Thursday’s road victory over Zaragoza and a 67-66 thriller against Girona on May 7. The home team has split its past four games overall but has won the last two head-to-head matchups after losing two of the previous three.

Forward Merritt Hempe leads Zaragoza’s attack. She scored 18 points with four rebounds in Thursday’s loss to Valencia and has averaged 14.7 points over her past five games. Guard Elena Buenavida paces Valencia; she posted 19 points, four rebounds and three assists in Thursday’s win and has been a consistent contributor, with double-digit scoring in four of her past six outings.

Thursday’s game also featured strong performances from Zaragoza’s Nadia Fingall (10 points, five rebounds) and Ornella Bankole (16 points, five rebounds), while Valencia got 20 points from center Khaalia Hillsman and 16 from Maria Barneda.

This marks the fourth meeting between the teams this season. Zaragoza won 81-71 at home on Jan. 21 and 70-63 on Dec. 9 in Valencia, while Valencia has captured the past two contests in Zaragoza.

Both teams are jockeying for playoff positioning. Zaragoza’s 41 wins are tops in the league, while Valencia’s 31 wins place them firmly in contention. A victory Sunday would give Valencia its third consecutive win over the league’s best team and strengthen its home-court edge.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Valencia’s arena.
