GEiEG vs. Maristas
CORUNA, Spain (Interstat) — The top two teams in Spain’s LF2 women’s basketball league collide Saturday when Maristas hosts GEiEG at Coruna.
Maristas (24-3 across all competitions) enters as the league leader, while GEiEG (20-6) sits second and looks to avenge a 71-58 loss at home on May 2.
That defeat was the most recent meeting between the sides, and GEiEG guard Marina Melero will be a key player to watch. Melero logged 14 points, five rebounds and three assists in 30 minutes during that loss. Over her last three games, she has averaged 18.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists, including a season-high 25-point performance in an 80-52 win at Gran Canaria II on April 12.
For Maristas, forward Brenda Fontana recorded a double-double in the May 2 win at GEiEG, posting 14 points, 12 rebounds, one assist and one block in 27 minutes. Fontana has been consistent, averaging 12.0 points and 8.7 rebounds over her last three outings, the most recent being a seven-point, eight-rebound, five-assist effort in a 72-71 home victory over Leon on April 18.
GEiEG has won five of its last six games overall, with the lone blemish being the loss to Maristas. The team’s other recent victories include a 74-36 rout of Viladecans on April 18. Forward Alba Coma and Vanessa Gonzalez also contributed in the May 2 matchup, combining for 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Maristas has won nine of its last 10 games, with its only defeat a 74-69 loss at Mariscos on Feb. 21. The team has been dominant at home and boasts the league’s best record, powered by a balanced attack that includes guards Nevena Dimitrijevic and Eugenia Filgueira. Dimitrijevic had nine points, four rebounds and four assists in the May 2 win, while Filgueira added nine points and seven rebounds.
Saturday’s game at Coruna tips off a critical stretch for both teams as the regular season winds down. A win would solidify Maristas’ hold on the top spot, while GEiEG aims to close the gap and avenge its most recent defeat.
