Sao Jose vs. Sampaio

SAO PAULO (Interstat) — Sampaio Basquete hosts Sao Jose on Thursday, June 11, in a women’s professional basketball matchup that pits the league’s dominant force against a middle-of-the-pack challenger.

Sampaio (20-2) has the best record in the competition and enters on a two-game winning streak, most recently defeating SESI 61-48 on Sunday. Forward Raphaella Monteiro led Sampaio in that game with 15 points, four assists and one rebound. She has been a consistent contributor throughout the season and will be a primary focus for Sao Jose’s defense.

Sao Jose (12-9) is coming off a 74-35 rout of ADRM Maringa on June 5, a game in which center Juliana Souza posted 18 points and 12 rebounds. Souza has been productive but inconsistent: she scored 31 points in a loss to Campinas on May 14 but managed just six points in a defeat to Cerrado Brasilia on June 2. Her performance will be critical if Sao Jose hopes to keep pace with Sampaio’s high-powered attack.

The teams met most recently on March 29, when Sampaio won 90-50 at Sao Jose. That lopsided result underscored the gap between the two sides, though Sao Jose has shown improvement since then, winning four of its last six contests.

Sampaio’s offense is fueled by a deep roster. Monique Soares pulled down seven rebounds in the SESI win, and Emanuely Oliveira added nine points and three assists. For Sao Jose, Rhayssa Souza and Rayane De Freitas provided scoring support in the Maringa victory, contributing 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Sampaio’s only two losses came against Campinas and had been largely untouchable otherwise, outscoring opponents by an average margin of more than 20 points. Sao Jose, meanwhile, has struggled against top teams, losing to Campinas and SESI in recent weeks.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time at Sampaio Basquete.
