Montbrison vs. Pays Voironnais
VOIRON, France (Interstat) — Montbrison visits Pays Voironnais on Saturday in a pivotal France LF2 women’s basketball matchup, with both teams jockeying for playoff positioning.
Montbrison (20-9 overall) enters with a slight edge in the standings, having won four of its last five games. Pays Voironnais (19-10) has dropped two of its past three but remains a formidable opponent on its home floor in Voiron.
The teams met just a week ago, with Montbrison prevailing 65-56 behind 20 points and seven rebounds from forward Michaela Vanderklugt. The victory gave Montbrison a 2-1 edge in the season series after Pays Voironnais won the first meeting 58-54 on Nov. 1, 2025. Montbrison also won the Feb. 14 matchup 89-61.
Vanderklugt has been a consistent force. In her last three games, she averaged 17 points and 6 rebounds, including a 24-point, nine-rebound outing against Saint-Amand on April 18. She played 35 minutes in the May 2 win over Pays Voironnais and will again be the focal point of the Montbrison attack.
For Pays Voironnais, guard Daniela Dibanzilua is the player to watch. She scored 18 points in the May 2 loss and erupted for 24 points in a narrow defeat at Mondeville on April 11. Dibanzilua, a shooting guard, has been the team’s leading scorer in recent weeks and will need help from forward Samantha Peytour, who grabbed nine rebounds in the last meeting.
Montbrison’s depth has been a key factor. Center Mariana Bulabula contributed 18 points and nine rebounds in the May 2 win, and guard Zarah Velleyen added three points, three rebounds and four assists. The team has won six of its last eight games, with losses only to La Tronche Meylan and Graffenstaden.
Pays Voironnais, meanwhile, has been inconsistent. After a three-game winning streak in late March, the team lost two straight before bouncing back with a 76-45 rout of Mondeville on April 18. The club’s offense relies heavily on Dibanzilua and guard Marine Mulumba, who had nine points, five rebounds and four assists in the May 2 game.
Saturday’s contest could have implications for the LF2 playoff seedings. Montbrison holds a one-game lead in the loss column, but a Pays Voironnais win would even the season series at 2-2 and tighten the race.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. local time.
