S.C. Phoenix vs. Southern Districts

BRISBANE, Australia (Interstat) — The Southern Districts will host the S.C. Phoenix on Sunday in a women’s professional basketball matchup at Brisbane, with the home team looking to extend a seven-win start to the NBL season.

Southern Districts (7-1) enter the game after a 73-65 victory at Northside on May 23, led by guard Jessica McDowell White, who posted 16 points, four rebounds and six assists. The team’s only loss came May 9 against Northside, an 86-82 defeat at home. Southern Districts have otherwise been dominant, winning by an average margin of 17 points in their other six victories, including a 95-66 rout of Rockhampton and a 105-61 demolition of Brisbane.

The Phoenix (3-4) are coming off a 92-81 loss at home to Logan on Saturday, despite 25 points and six rebounds from forward Maya Price. Price has been a consistent force, recording a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) in a 78-74 win over Ipswich on May 24 and averaging 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds over her last four games. The Phoenix have alternated wins and losses this season, with their three victories coming against Ipswich, Gold Coast and North Gold Coast.

Sunday’s game features two of the league’s top performers. For Southern Districts, White has been a triple-double threat; on May 16 at North Gold Coast, she recorded 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 77-70 win. She also scored 24 points in the loss to Northside. For the Phoenix, Price’s versatility will be key; she leads the team in scoring and rebounding and has logged at least 31 minutes in each of her last four outings.

Southern Districts’ depth has been a factor. Emily Preston added seven points and 11 rebounds in the win over Northside, while Maria Barneda chipped in nine points and seven rebounds. The Phoenix have relied on Amy Browne, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds against Logan, and Erin Bollmann, who contributed 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

The teams are scheduled to meet again June 27 in Phoenix’s home arena. For now, Southern Districts aim to maintain their place atop the standings, while Phoenix seek to climb above .500. Tipoff is Sunday at Brisbane.
