Sturt vs. South Adelaide

ADELAIDE, Australia (Interstat) — The Sturt women’s basketball team brings a 7-2 record into Saturday’s NBL matchup against South Adelaide, which sits at 6-3. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Adelaide Arena in Adelaide, Australia.

Sturt enters the game coming off a 93-66 loss to West Adelaide on May 9, a defeat that snapped a three-game winning streak. Center Lizzy Williamson led Sturt in that game with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 21 minutes. She has been a consistent interior presence this season, recording double-doubles in two of her past four outings, including a 15-point, 10-rebound effort against Eastern on April 25.

South Adelaide, meanwhile, is riding a victory after a 100-56 blowout of Eastern on May 9, which improved its home record to 3-1. Guard Keira Gardiner paced the Panthers in that win with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists in 21 minutes. Gardiner has reached double figures in scoring in three of her last four games, including a 14-point, five-rebound performance against Woodville on May 2.

The teams last met on March 21, when Sturt won 62-52 at home. South Adelaide limited Sturt to 38 percent shooting but could not overcome 16 turnovers. The Panthers will look to avenge that loss and even the season series.

For Sturt, Williamson remains a focal point. The 6-foot-3 center averages 10.3 points and 5.8 rebounds over her past five games. Her ability to draw fouls and finish around the rim will test South Adelaide’s frontcourt depth.

South Adelaide counters with Gardiner, a versatile guard who leads the team in assists (4.2 per game) and ranks second in scoring (14.1). Her court vision and quick first step create opportunities for shooters Hannah Stewart and Hannah Gardiner. Stewart is coming off an 18-point, seven-rebound outing against Eastern, while Hannah Gardiner added 18 points and eight boards in that same contest.

Both teams have shown offensive firepower — Sturt averages 79.4 points per game, South Adelaide 77.8 — but defense may decide the outcome. Sturt yields 66.8 points per game, while South Adelaide allows 70.2. The Panthers have struggled against top-tier opponents, losing to West Adelaide 109-54 on April 11 and to Woodville 82-66 on May 2.

Sturt’s recent struggles on the road — they lost by 27 at West Adelaide — raise questions about their consistency away from home. However, they have won three of four away games this season. South Adelaide has alternated wins and losses over its past four home games.

The game also marks the beginning of a busy stretch for both clubs. Sturt faces Forestville on May 30, while South Adelaide travels to West Adelaide the same day.

Key matchups to watch include Williamson against South Adelaide’s post defenders and Gardiner against Sturt’s perimeter defense, led by point guard Paige Padroth. Padroth had 10 points and three assists in the loss to West Adelaide.

Fans can expect a tightly contested game between two of the NBL’s top four teams. Sturt sits second in the standings, South Adelaide fourth. The winner will gain crucial momentum heading into the final month of the regular season.
