Southwest vs. Mandurah
MANDURAH, Australia (Interstat) — The Mandurah women’s basketball team aims to build momentum Saturday when it hosts Southwest in a National Basketball League matchup at Mandurah Arena, with both teams jockeying for position in the early season.
Mandurah (5-5) enters the game after a 98-83 loss to Warwick on Friday, but the team has won three of its past five contests. Southwest (3-6) is coming off a 68-64 victory over Lakeside on May 23, ending a three-game losing streak.
The teams met three weeks ago, with Mandurah winning 95-80 at Southwest on May 9. In that game, Mandurah guard Mikayla Pivec posted 19 points, 17 rebounds and 9 assists. Southwest’s Cassidy Lacey Rameka had 27 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.
Pivec, a key facilitator, has been a consistent double-double threat. In her past five games, she has averaged 19.4 points, 13.6 rebounds and 8.6 assists per contest. She recorded a triple-double on May 22 against Perth Redbacks with 20 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists, and followed that with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 9 assists in the loss to Warwick.
Rameka has been a force for Southwest. The forward logged 23 points and 22 rebounds in the win over Lakeside, playing 38 minutes. She also had 19 points and 9 rebounds against Joondalup City on May 2, and 27 points and 8 rebounds in the previous meeting with Mandurah. She leads Southwest in scoring and rebounding.
Southwest will need contributions from guard MarShaun Bostic, who had 7 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists against Lakeside, and forward Maria Barneda, who added 17 points and 3 rebounds. The team has struggled on the road, losing four of five away games this season, including a 100-46 defeat at Cockburn on May 1.
Mandurah’s supporting cast includes guard Sharn Hayward, who had 13 points and 3 assists against Warwick, and guard Claire Jacobs, who scored 28 points in that contest. The home team has won four of six games at Mandurah Arena.
Both teams face challenging schedules ahead. Southwest visits Perth Redbacks on June 5, while Mandurah hosts Lakeside on June 6.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. local time.
