Newcastle vs. Hornsby

HORNSBY, Australia (Interstat) — Two of the top teams in the Australia NBL women’s division meet Sunday when Hornsby hosts Newcastle in a matchup that could tighten the standings.

Hornsby (9-4) holds a one-game edge over Newcastle (8-4) entering the 3 p.m. local tip-off at Hornsby Arena. The home side comes off a dramatic 98-97 win at Sutherland on Saturday, while Newcastle dropped a 85-72 decision at Bankstown on the same day.

Newcastle’s Nicole Munger, a guard, has been a scoring force. She played 40 minutes against Bankstown, pouring in 36 points with 10 rebounds and five assists. That followed a 35-point, five-rebound, eight-assist outing in a 76-64 win over Illawarra on May 23. Munger averaged 28 points over her last three games.

Hornsby counters with Kristina Moore, a swing player who logged 45 minutes in Saturday’s victory, finishing with 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Moore has scored at least 20 points in three of her last four outings, including a 22-point, four-rebound, five-assist performance in a 109-81 loss to Canberra Nationals on May 31.

Newcastle’s supporting cast includes forward Megan Jefferson, who contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists against Bankstown, and center Mia Heide, who added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Hornsby got 25 points and nine rebounds from guard Ruby Perkins and 16 points from forward AyAnna Bey in the win over Sutherland.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again July 12 in Newcastle.
