Hornsby vs. Sutherland

SUTHERLAND, Australia (Interstat) — The Hornsby and Sutherland women’s basketball teams will meet Saturday in an NBL1 clash at Sutherland Stadium, with both sides seeking to build momentum in the early season.

Hornsby (8-4 overall) enters the game after a 109-81 home loss to Canberra on May 31, snapping a three-game winning streak. The defeat exposed defensive vulnerabilities, as Canberra shot 52% from the field and outrebounded Hornsby 48-32. Guard Ruby Perkins led Hornsby in scoring in that game with 24 points, while Kristina Moore added 22 points, four rebounds and five assists in 33 minutes. Moore, a swing player, has been a consistent offensive force, averaging 18.5 points over her last four appearances, including a 20-point, five-rebound effort in a 90-79 win at Centre of Excellence on May 24.

Sutherland (6-4) rides a three-game winning streak into Saturday, capped by an 88-56 rout at Penrith on May 31. Forward Madeleine Norris dominated that game with 26 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, part of a stellar recent run. Over her last three contests, Norris has posted three consecutive double-doubles, averaging 22.0 points and 13.0 rebounds. Guard Lauren Nicholson also scored 17 points in the Penrith win, while Olivia Douglas contributed 11 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

Both teams have shown offensive firepower but contrasting defensive consistency. Hornsby has scored 90 or more points in five of its eight wins but has allowed 100 or more in two of its four losses. Sutherland has held opponents to 64 points or fewer in five victories this season, though its three losses came by an average margin of 12.3 points.

The game marks the first meeting of the season between the two sides. Hornsby will look to regain its offensive rhythm behind Moore, who has scored at least 13 points in each of her last four games. Sutherland will counter with Norris, whose rebounding and inside scoring present a significant challenge for Hornsby’s frontcourt.

Saturday’s winner gains early positioning in the tightly packed NBL1 standings. Hornsby, which holds a two-game edge over Sutherland in the loss column, aims to stay near the top of the table. Sutherland, coming off a weeklong break, seeks to extend its streak and close the gap.
