Geelong vs. Waverley

MOUNT WAVERLEY, Australia (Interstat) — The Geelong Falcons, mired in a difficult season, visit the Waverley Falcons on Sunday in a women’s NBL1 South matchup at Mount Waverley.

Geelong (9-25) enters the game seeking to snap a two-game losing streak after falling 88-80 to Northern Force on Saturday. The Falcons have lost six of their last seven games. Waverley (5-7) returns to action after a 70-66 road win against Frankston on May 16.

Geelong will lean heavily on forward Reagan Bass, who has been a consistent force despite the team’s struggles. In Saturday’s loss, Bass played 37 minutes and posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, adding one block. Over her last six games, Bass has recorded four double-doubles, including a 21-point, three-rebound effort in a 74-70 loss at Keilor on May 3. She also had 12 points and eight rebounds in a 100-84 win at Ringwood on May 10.

The Falcons will also look for production from guard Lilly Rotunno, who led Geelong in scoring Saturday with 18 points, five rebounds and seven assists in 37 minutes. Jordan Vasquez added 17 points and 14 rebounds in that game.

Waverley counters with forward Katelyn Shumate, who has been a steady two-way presence. In the May 16 win at Frankston, Shumate played 31 minutes and collected 10 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and one block. She scored 15 points with five rebounds against Casey on May 10 and tallied 16 points and eight rebounds in a 81-76 loss at Eltham on May 9.

The Falcons have shown offensive firepower at times this season but have struggled defensively, allowing 80 or more points in 11 of their losses. Waverley has been competitive in close games, with four of their seven losses decided by single digits.

Both teams are looking to build momentum toward the end of the regular season. Following Sunday’s contest, Geelong travels to Ballarat on May 30, while Waverley visits Bendigo Braves on the same date.
