Casey vs. Waverley
WOMEN’S NBL: Casey at Waverley
MOUNT WAVERLEY, Australia (Interstat) — The Waverley Falcons host the Casey Cavaliers on Sunday in a Women’s NBL matchup at Mount Waverley, with both teams looking to bounce back from losses.
Casey (6-2) brings the league’s second-best record to the contest but is coming off a 85-63 defeat Saturday to Sandringham. The Cavaliers had won four straight before that setback, including a 113-89 victory at Hobart on April 24 in which center Samantha Bowman posted 20 points and 19 rebounds.
Bowman, a 6-foot-3 post player, has been a dominant force for Casey. Over her past five games, she has averaged 16.6 points and 12.6 rebounds while logging heavy minutes. In the loss to Sandringham, she played 31 minutes and finished with 14 points and eight boards.
Waverley (4-6) fell 81-76 at Eltham on Saturday, its second loss in three games. Guard Katelyn Shumate led the Falcons in that game with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists in 27 minutes.
Shumate has been Waverley’s most consistent performer this season. She logged 30 minutes in a 73-61 win over Dandenong on May 3, contributing six points, four rebounds and three blocks. The Falcons have shown flashes of form, including a 86-59 victory at Mount Gambier on April 25.
Sunday’s game marks the first meeting of the season between the two sides. Casey holds a 6-2 record across all competitions, while Waverley sits at 4-6. The Cavaliers have been explosive offensively, scoring at least 88 points in five of their eight games. Waverley has struggled for consistency, alternating wins and losses over its past six outings. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time.
