Kilsyth vs. Bendigo Braves

BENDIGO, Australia (Interstat) — Two teams desperate to find traction in the NBL1 South women’s standings meet Sunday when the Kilsyth Cobras visit the Bendigo Braves.

Both clubs enter the June 14 contest with identical 4-9 records, tied for 11th place and mired in four-game losing streaks. The loser will fall further behind in the race for a postseason berth as the midpoint of the regular season approaches.

Kilsyth arrives having dropped a 84-67 decision to Knox on May 30. Guard Emme Shearer led the Cobras with 17 points, three rebounds and two assists in 28 minutes. Shearer has been the team’s most consistent scorer, averaging 19 points over her past three outings despite all resulting in losses. On May 16 against Keilor, she poured in 25 points with six rebounds in a full 40-minute effort.

The Cobras, who have lost nine of their past 10 games, have struggled mightily on defense. In their last six defeats, opponents have averaged 90.3 points per game. Forward Lily Exton contributed 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss to Knox, while Catelyn Van Es added eight points and four rebounds.

Bendigo also fell Saturday, dropping a 91-70 decision to Waverley despite a 25-point, two-rebound, two-assist performance from guard Ahlise Hurst. The Braves shot just 38% from the field in that game and allowed Waverley to connect on 11 three-pointers.

Hurst, who has scored in double figures in four of her past five games, has been a bright spot for a Bendigo team that has lost eight of its last nine. The Braves allowed 100 or more points in back-to-back losses to Diamond Valley (109) and Casey (96) earlier in the month.

Veteran guard Kelly Wilson logged a full 40 minutes against Waverley, finishing with 13 points, five rebounds and eight assists. Forward Olivia Pollerd added 16 points and six rebounds.

Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. local time at Bendigo Stadium. The teams will meet again July 18 in Kilsyth.
