Waverley vs. Bendigo Braves

BENDIGO, Australia (Interstat) — The Waverley Falcons visit the Bendigo Braves on Saturday in NBL1 South women’s action, with both teams seeking consistency amid middling starts to the season.

Waverley (6-7 overall) enters the 7:30 p.m. local tip-off at Bendigo Stadium after a 72-67 home victory over Geelong on May 24. Forward Madelynn Utti logged 17 points and 12 rebounds in that win, her second double-double in three games. The Falcons have alternated wins and losses across their past five contests, with vulnerabilities exposed in a 65-80 home defeat to Casey on May 10.

Bendigo (4-8) comes off a 109-93 loss at Diamond Valley on May 24, a game in which forward Hannah Hank scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Braves have dropped five of their past six games, with their sole win in that stretch a 86-78 home victory over Frankston on May 23.

Utti, a 5-foot-11 forward, has been Waverley’s most consistent performer. Over her past five games, she has averaged 12.8 points and 8.0 rebounds, shooting efficiently from the field. Her ability to score inside and on the perimeter will be critical against a Bendigo defense that has allowed 90 or more points four times this season.

Hank, a 6-foot-1 forward, is Bendigo’s primary offensive threat. In her past two games, she has averaged 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds, including a 27-point, 11-rebound effort last Sunday. The Braves will need support from guards such as Kelly Wilson, who dished 13 assists in the loss to Diamond Valley, and Olivia Pollerd, who scored 26 points in that same game.

Waverley’s depth has been a factor, with forward Sophia Locandro contributing 14 points and six rebounds against Geelong, and guard Liana Kinkela added 12 points off the bench. For Bendigo, defensive rebounding remains a concern after allowing 109 points to Diamond Valley.

The Braves have struggled at home, posting a 2-4 record in Bendigo this season. Waverley is 3-3 on the road. Both teams face challenging schedules ahead, making Saturday’s result important for positioning in the crowded NBL1 South standings.
