Newcastle vs. Bankstown
CONDELL PARK, Australia (Interstat) — The top two teams in the Australia NBL women’s division square off Saturday when the Bankstown Bruins host the Newcastle Hunters at Condell Park.
Bankstown (10-2) holds the league’s best record across all competitions, while Newcastle (8-3) sits a half-game behind. Saturday’s matchup marks the first meeting this season between the conference rivals.
The Bruins enter on a five-game winning streak after routing Central Coast 94-52 on May 31. Point guard Shyla Heal led the way with 25 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes. Heal has averaged 23.7 points over her past three games, including back-to-back 23-point outings against Inner West and Canberra Nationals.
Newcastle, conversely, is coming off a 84-61 loss at Centre of Excellence on May 30. Forward Mia Heide posted a double-double with 15 rebounds and six points despite the defeat, along with two assists and four blocks. She played 34 minutes and will be a key interior presence Saturday.
Newcastle’s recent form is mixed: The Hunters won three of their previous four games before the loss to Centre of Excellence, including a 76-64 victory over Illawarra on May 23 and a 78-60 win against Maitland on May 16. However, they dropped a 93-75 decision at Northern Suburbs on May 9.
Bankstown has been dominant defensively, holding opponents to 65.8 points per game over its last five contests. The Bruins’ only losses came at Northern Suburbs on April 11 (113-61) and at Centre of Excellence on March 29 (89-63). They have won seven of their past eight games.
Newcastle will look for contributions beyond Heide. Megan Jefferson scored 21 points in the Centre of Excellence loss, and Nicole Munger added 13 points. For Bankstown, Margot de Freitas and Shalome Dunlop each scored in double figures in the Central Coast win.
Saturday’s game tips off at 7 p.m. local time. The Bruins then travel to Illawarra on June 21, while the Hunters face Hornsby on June 14.
