Centre of Excellence vs. Manly Warringah
NARRABEEN, Australia (Interstat) — The top two teams in the NBL1 women’s competition collide Sunday when the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles host the Centre of Excellence in a battle for supremacy at Narrabeen.
Manly Warringah, 13-2, enters with the league’s best record. The Sea Eagles have won three of their last four, including a 83-70 victory over Albury Wodonga on Saturday in which forward Alex Delaney posted 19 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes. Delaney, who also tallied 22 points and 12 rebounds against Maitland on May 24, has been a consistent force in the paint. She leads a balanced attack that has scored at least 80 points in five of its last six outings.
Centre of Excellence, 13-4, sits just a half-game behind despite playing one more contest. The visitors have won four of their last five, including a dominant 92-53 road win Saturday at Central Coast. Forward Lily Mapp keyed that performance with 19 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes, continuing a strong stretch that has seen her record double-doubles in three of her last four games. Mapp also grabbed 22 rebounds in a win over Sydney Comets on May 31 and collected 12 points and 12 boards against Hornsby on May 24.
The teams met once earlier this season, with Manly Warringah claiming an 80-67 home win on May 10. Centre of Excellence will seek to even the series and tighten the standings race as both sides approach the midway point of the campaign. Mapp and Delaney are expected to be focal points, with each capable of controlling the glass and generating offense from the post.
Sunday’s matchup also marks a crucial test for Centre of Excellence, which faces Sutherland on the road next Saturday. Manly Warringah welcomes Illawarra at home on the same date, making the result here a potential springboard for the week ahead. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. local time.
