THATCHER, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by critical runs and a standout individual performance, the Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters avenged an early-season overtime loss by defeating the College of Southern Idaho Eagles 64-56 in a women’s junior college basketball game Saturday.

The matchup between two of the nation’s top programs lived up to its billing, with Eastern Arizona improving to 29-2 and Southern Idaho falling to 28-5. The game was a rematch of a Nov. 6 thriller won by Southern Idaho 77-74 in overtime on this same floor.

The most important sequence of the game came late in the fourth quarter, breaking a tense deadlock. With the score tied at 56 and just over three minutes remaining, Eastern Arizona’s Danaeja Romero-Ah Sam delivered the decisive blow. She connected on a 3-point jump shot at the 3:31 mark to put the Gila Monsters ahead for good at 59-56. Southern Idaho, which had battled back from a 12-point halftime deficit, could not answer, missing its next four field goal attempts as Eastern Arizona closed the game on an 8-0 run.

Eastern Arizona was propelled by a stellar performance from guard Esmeralda Enriquez, who scored a game-high 24 points. Her offensive output was crucial in building the Gila Monsters’ first-half advantage. She scored 10 points in the first quarter alone, helping Eastern Arizona establish a 14-11 lead. The home team then used a 19-point second quarter to stretch its lead to 33-25 at halftime.

Southern Idaho refused to fade, mounting a sustained comeback in the third quarter. The Eagles outscored Eastern Arizona 18-13 in the period, cutting the deficit to 46-43 entering the final frame. Ashley Garner, who led the Eagles with 18 points and 11 rebounds, was instrumental in the push, scoring eight points in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter became a back-and-forth affair featuring five ties. Southern Idaho’s Savannah Stoker, who finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, scored on a layup with 6:57 remaining to knot the score at 52. Romero-Ah Sam answered with a jumper for Eastern Arizona, and the teams traded baskets until the 56-56 tie with 4:42 left, setting the stage for the final, game-defining run.

Beyond Enriquez, Eastern Arizona received balanced support. Romero-Ah Sam provided a vital offensive spark off the bench with 15 points, all from the field. Lucia Auza facilitated the offense with five assists, and Eanae Dagons added four assists and three steals, part of a disruptive Gila Monsters defense that forced numerous Southern Idaho turnovers.

For Southern Idaho, Garner’s double-double anchored the effort, while Samara Morrow contributed nine points. The Eagles’ comeback attempt was ultimately undone by cold shooting down the stretch and the Gila Monsters’ timely scoring in the final minutes.

The victory gives Eastern Arizona momentum and a measure of payback from its only home loss of the season, while Southern Idaho will look to regroup after seeing its winning streak snapped.
