Long Beach vs Cypress
CYPRESS, Calif. (Interstat) — A spot in the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional semifinals is on the line Saturday when the Cypress Chargers host the Long Beach City Vikings in a second-round women’s basketball playoff game.
Tipoff is set for Saturday at Cypress College. General admission is $12, with discounted $8 tickets available for students, faculty, staff, seniors 60 and over, and children 12 and under.
The No. 6-seeded Chargers (21-7) enter with a stronger overall record and the home-court advantage, but the Vikings (17-10) ride a significant wave of momentum. Long Beach has won seven consecutive games, including a 68-50 victory over Ventura in the first round on Wednesday. The Vikings’ last loss was on Jan. 30.
Cypress, which had a first-round bye, last played on Feb. 20, defeating Santa Ana 71-58. The Chargers have won three of their last four contests.
The matchup features a compelling head-to-head history. The teams met earlier this season on Nov. 19, with Cypress edging Long Beach 65-57 in overtime at home.
A key battle will be in the paint, where two of the region’s top forwards will clash. Cypress is led by Christaesha Jackson, a dominant force who averaged 21.8 points and 11.2 rebounds over her last five games. She posted a triple-double with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the win over Santa Ana.
Long Beach counters with Devoni Ray, a consistent performer during the Vikings’ win streak. Over her last five outings, Ray has provided steady rebounding and scoring, including an 11-point, 8-rebound effort in the playoff opener against Ventura.
For Long Beach, Mya Barnes (15 points) and Zoie Lamkin (10 points) were also pivotal in the win over Ventura. Cypress relies on additional scoring from Marina Leiva and Mariah Henderson, who combined for 30 points against Santa Ana.
The winner will advance to the 3C2A SoCal Regional semifinals on March 4.
