Fullerton vs Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The No. 10-seeded Santa Barbara City College women’s basketball team will host Fullerton in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regionals on Wednesday.

The Vaqueros (21-6), entering the postseason on a five-game winning streak, are heavy favorites against the visiting Hornets (13-14). Santa Barbara defeated Fullerton 68-61 in a non-conference matchup on Dec. 20.

Santa Barbara is led by forward Aariah Fox, who has been a consistent force on the boards. In her last seven games, Fox has averaged 8.4 points and 11.6 rebounds, including a 15-rebound performance in a win over Allan Hancock on Feb. 14. In the team’s regular-season finale, a 73-49 rout of Cuesta, Milan Jackson led the way with 15 points.

Fullerton, which has lost three of its last four, will rely on guard Hailey Lakey. She is coming off a 14-point, 7-rebound effort in a loss to Irvine Valley last Friday and scored 23 points in a win over Cypress on Feb. 10. Supporting players include Erin Choi, who had 11 points and five assists against Irvine Valley.

The Vaqueros have dominated defensively lately, holding opponents under 50 points in three of their last five victories. Fullerton’s offense has struggled at times, scoring 54 points or fewer in four of its last seven games.

The winner will advance to the second round of the 3C2A SoCal Regionals on Saturday, Feb. 28. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the SBCC Sports Pavilion.
