Desert vs Chaffey

Preview: Desert Roadrunners at Chaffey Panthers

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (Interstat) — A crucial late-season California Community College Athletic Association women’s basketball matchup unfolds Friday when the Chaffey Panthers host the Desert Roadrunners.

Tipoff is set for Feb. 20, 2026, with the Panthers (14-12) looking to solidify their standing and complete a regular-season sweep of the Roadrunners (11-12).

Chaffey enters having dropped its last outing, 93-70 at Copper Mountain on Feb. 14, which snapped a four-game win streak. Prior to that, the Panthers had been dominant, winning those four games by an average margin of 29.3 points. Their recent success has been fueled by a balanced attack and strong defense.

A key player for Chaffey is Aerilynn Young. The forward has been productive in limited minutes, posting 14 points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes against Barstow on Feb. 11 and 12 points with five rebounds against Palo Verde on Feb. 4. Her presence inside will be vital.

Desert arrives with momentum from a 67-52 home victory over Palo Verde on Feb. 14. That win evened their record at 3-3 over their last six games, a stretch marked by dramatic swings. The Roadrunners have suffered several lopsided defeats but have also shown potent offensive capability.

The Roadrunners are led by standout guard Giovanna Espinoza, who is coming off a career performance. She poured in 29 points with four rebounds and four assists in 40 minutes against Palo Verde. This followed an 18-point, seven-rebound, five-assist effort in a win over San Bernardino Valley on Feb. 7. Containing Espinoza will be a primary focus for the Chaffey defense.

History favors the Panthers, who handily won the first meeting this season, 77-51 at Desert on Jan. 21. In that contest, Chaffey’s defense stifled the Roadrunners’ offense, a feat they will aim to replicate at home.

The matchup carries playoff implications for both teams as they jockey for position in the conference standings. Desert seeks to avenge its earlier loss and climb above .500, while Chaffey aims to rebound from its last defeat and protect its home court.
