Ventura vs Cuesta

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — The Ventura College Pirates and Cuesta College Cougars will meet for the second time this season in a California community college women’s basketball matchup Saturday.

The Western State Conference North Division game tips off at 5 p.m. on Feb. 14 at Cuesta’s gymnasium.

Ventura (9-12) seeks a regular-season sweep after dominating the first meeting, 65-45, at home on Jan. 21. The Pirates have lost three of their last four, however, including a narrow 57-54 defeat to Santa Barbara on Feb. 7. In that game, forward Riannah Lopez posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Sienna Angell added 16 points and Kayla Lumas had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Lopez, a key player for the Pirates, has been inconsistent but capable of big performances, including a 22-point outing on Jan. 17. She will be central to Ventura’s efforts to control the paint.

Cuesta (11-13) enters on a winning note after a gritty 37-36 road victory at Oxnard on Feb. 11. Guard Kinzie Amer led the Cougars with 10 points in that low-scoring affair. The Cougars’ season has been marked by volatility, with the win over Oxnard preceded by a 64-33 loss to Moorpark.

The Cougars will aim for a stronger offensive showing than their January performance against Ventura, where they managed only 45 points. Amer and forward Fiona Durham, who had 7 points and 7 rebounds against Oxnard, will be relied upon to provide scoring punch.

Historically, the recent advantage lies with Ventura. Beyond this season’s win, the Pirates have won three of the last five matchups.

Both teams are jockeying for position in the division standings, making this a pivotal late-season contest. Ventura will look to Lopez and its interior presence to replicate its prior success, while Cuesta hopes home-court advantage and a renewed defensive focus after the Oxnard win can spark an upset.

The game will be played on Valentine’s Day, offering an early evening basketball showcase for local fans.
