Monterey Peninsula vs San Jose
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Wednesday when the surging San Jose Jaguars host the winless Monterey Peninsula Lobos in a California community college women’s basketball game.
The Jaguars (17-6) enter the contest riding a wave of momentum, having won eight of their last nine games. Their most recent victory was a 68-60 road win over San Francisco on Feb. 6. San Jose’s offense has been potent, averaging 74.5 points per game during that successful stretch.
A key catalyst has been guard Synis Byrd, who is coming off a dominant performance in an 84-46 rout of Gavilan on Feb. 4. In that game, Byrd scored 26 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists in just 21 minutes of play. She will be the primary player to watch as San Jose looks to exploit its significant advantage.
Monterey Peninsula (0-19) continues to search for its first victory of the season amid a campaign defined by offensive struggles. The Lobos are averaging just 36.7 points per game and are coming off a 62-29 home loss to San Mateo on Feb. 6. Their season includes several particularly difficult outings, including a 70-26 loss to Mission on Jan. 23 and a 90-41 defeat at Mission on Feb. 3.
The Lobos’ most competitive performance came in a 50-43 loss to Gavilan on Jan. 16, which represents their smallest margin of defeat this season. Replicating that defensive effort will be crucial against a high-scoring San Jose squad.
Historically, the Jaguars have dominated recent matchups, including a 92-34 victory over Gavilan last month and a 72-35 win against San Mateo in January. Monterey Peninsula has not scored more than 47 points in any game this season.
Wednesday’s game is the first of two scheduled meetings between the teams in a 10-day span. They are set to meet again at Monterey Peninsula on Feb. 20.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at San Jose City College.
