Cuyamaca vs Southwestern

SOUTHWESTERN SEEKS SEASON SWEEP AGAINST CUYAMACA IN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Southwestern College Spartans will look to complete a regular-season sweep when they host the Cuyamaca Coyotes in a California Community College women’s basketball game Wednesday night.

The matchup features two teams seeking momentum in the final weeks of the season. Southwestern (8-14 overall) enters with a 76-67 road victory over Cuyamaca from Jan. 16 in the teams’ only previous meeting this season. The Spartans have lost three straight since, including a 112-47 defeat at Palomar on Feb. 6.

Cuyamaca (3-13) is mired in a five-game losing streak, most recently a 87-36 home loss to MiraCosta on Feb. 4. The Coyotes’ last win was a 67-52 victory at Imperial Valley on Jan. 21.

A key player to watch for Southwestern is guard Aliyah Perry, who is coming off a 16-point, 4-rebound performance in 24 minutes against Palomar. Perry also scored 25 points in a loss to San Diego Mesa on Jan. 21 and recorded a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) against MiraCosta on Jan. 23. In the first matchup against Cuyamaca, Perry played one minute.

Cuyamaca will rely on forward Vivianna Cravens, who has been a consistent contributor. In the recent loss to MiraCosta, Cravens posted 12 points and 8 rebounds. She also scored 16 points in the Coyotes’ win over Imperial Valley. Her production will be critical for a Cuyamaca offense averaging just 46.5 points per game during its current losing skid.

Southwestern’s Angelica McBride, who had 17 points and 6 rebounds against Palomar, provides a secondary scoring threat alongside Perry. For Cuyamaca, Belinda Diaz and Yasmine Zufri, who combined for 15 points and 19 rebounds against MiraCosta, offer supporting roles.

The Spartans have struggled defensively, allowing an average of 99.3 points in their last three losses. Cuyamaca has faced similar challenges, yielding 87.4 points per game during its five-game slide.

Wednesday’s contest is the first of two home games this week for Southwestern, which hosts Imperial Valley on Friday. Cuyamaca returns home to face Imperial Valley on Friday as well.
