Loyola Maryland Rolls Past Notre Dame (MD) in Home Opener

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Loyola Maryland opened its season with a dominant 76-30 victory over visiting Notre Dame (MD) in a non-divisional women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Monday at Reitz Arena. The Greyhounds improved to 1-0 and controlled the game from the opening minutes. Attendance was 343. Notre Dame (MD) was held to 30 points and could not keep pace after halftime.

Loyola Maryland scored 76 points from 67 possessions, an offensive rating of 114.0, and finished with 14 offensive rebounds, nine assists, two blocks and 12 turnovers. Notre Dame (MD) scored seven points in the first quarter, nine in the second, five in the third and nine in the fourth. Loyola Maryland scored 10 in the first quarter, 22 in the second, 26 in the third and 18 in the fourth. The Greyhounds led after every quarter and turned a double-digit halftime advantage into a runaway in the third.

The decisive stretch came in the third quarter, when Loyola Maryland pulled away for good. Tyler Edwards opened the second half with a floating jump shot, Aidan Langley followed with a 3-point jump shot, and Amandine Amorich and Olivia Shaughnessy added layups as the Greyhounds expanded their lead. Takeira Ramey’s driving layup and free throw late in the third capped the surge. Notre Dame (MD) had no answer for Loyola Maryland’s interior scoring and transition attack, and the lead remained comfortable through the fourth quarter.

Amandine Amorich, a 5-foot-11 guard from Montpellier, France, who previously played at Cegep de Sainte-Foy in Quebec, produced 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes. Tyler Edwards added 12 points, six rebounds and two assists in 15 minutes. Takeira Ramey contributed 10 points, four rebounds and one assist in 28 minutes. Olivia Shaughnessy, a 5-foot-7 guard who previously played at Manasquan High School, had 10 points, five rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes. Avery Simmons, a 5-foot-11 guard from Park Hill South, finished with six points, eight rebounds, one assist and one block in 16 minutes.

Aidan Langley scored 11 points, grabbed three rebounds and blocked one shot in 20 minutes. Talia Shumate added six points and three rebounds in 10 minutes. Kailey Kalet, a 5-foot-8 guard from Union Springs, had two points, one rebound and three assists in 18 minutes. Ava Kopetskie contributed three points, two rebounds and one assist in eight minutes. Sydney Bass, a 5-foot-10 guard from Strongsville High School, scored three points in 12 minutes.

Loyola Maryland set the tone early as Ramey hit a pull-up jumper and Amorich and Edwards scored consecutive layups for a 6-0 lead. Notre Dame (MD) briefly steadied behind Madison Simmons, who made a jump shot and free throws, but Loyola Maryland answered with Amorich’s 3-point jump shot and Ramey’s late first-quarter layup. The Greyhounds then used the second quarter to stretch the margin, with Avery Simmons scoring twice inside and Shumate converting a layup. Any hope of a Notre Dame comeback faded when Loyola Maryland opened the third quarter with the Edwards-Langley sequence and kept adding baskets from Amorich, Shaughnessy, Ramey and Langley.

Notre Dame (MD) received production from Madison Simmons, Mckenzie Thomas, Amani Watts and Marecia Barnett, but the visitors could not sustain enough offense against Loyola Maryland’s pressure and size. Thomas made a 3-point field goal and two free throws in the third quarter, while Watts made free throws and a layup in the fourth. Langley repeatedly scored inside for the Greyhounds in the final period, and Shaughnessy hit 3-pointers as Loyola Maryland closed out the win. Bass and Kopetskie also connected from beyond the arc in the fourth.

Loyola Maryland next visits La Salle, then returns home for Yale, Towson, Drexel, Washington Adventist and Cornell. The Greyhounds also travel to Delaware, George Washington and Georgetown before hosting William & Mary.
