Long Island Sharks at Texas State Bobcats

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Interstat) — Long Island will try to bounce back from a season-opening loss when it visits Texas State in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game on Wednesday at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas.

The Sharks (0-1) are seeking their first victory after dropping their opener 83-52 at Rutgers. Janessa Williams is the player to watch for Long Island after she scored 22 points and added eight rebounds, two assists and one block in 35 minutes in that game. Laura Molnárová contributed six points and 11 rebounds, and Leila Nunez added 10 points and three blocks for the Sharks in the loss.

Long Island will look to improve its offense and rebounding against a Texas State team that has yet to play this season. The Bobcats (0-0) will open their campaign after a 69-59 loss to South Alabama in their most recent game. Texas State will try to establish control at home and avoid a slow start in its first outing. Both teams will be seeking to set a tone in nonconference play, and the matchup offers an early test for each roster.

Texas State will rely on its home-court advantage at Strahan Coliseum as it begins a new season. The Bobcats have several nonconference games ahead, including home matchups with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Pacific, Bradley, UTEP, Nevada and Prairie View, along with road games at Chicago State, Incarnate Word, Lamar and North Dakota. Their focus will be on matching Long Island’s energy and limiting second-chance opportunities.

Long Island, meanwhile, is in the middle of a demanding road stretch. After facing the Bobcats, the Sharks will continue their road schedule at Pittsburgh in their next game before additional nonconference matchups. Long Island’s upcoming slate also includes road games at SMU, George Washington, Rider and American, plus home contests against Manhattan, Saint Peter’s, Coppin State, Lehigh and Berkeley (NJ). The Sharks will need consistent production from Williams and support from the frontcourt to leave San Marcos with a win.

The matchup will feature two teams looking to build early-season momentum. Long Island enters with game experience after its opener, while Texas State will be making its season debut. The Sharks will aim to use their recent game action to their advantage, while the Bobcats will try to settle in quickly in front of their home crowd. Long Island will need to handle Texas State’s home energy and protect the ball while creating quality shots in the half court. The Bobcats will try to use their depth and home surroundings to offset Long Island’s recent game experience.

The game simulator projects a final score of Long Island 64, Texas State 60.
